RETOLD: Valparaiso

October 16, 2017
by Thomas Hoepker
'It is in Valparaiso that I started to photograph, pacing up and down the hills day and night. The little girls going downstairs was the first magical photo I took. A good image emerged from a state of grace. Grace arises when one is freed from conventions, free like a child when he discovers reality for the first time. The trick is therefore to compose the frame' - Sergio Larrain

Thomas Hoepker has travelled to Chile many times covering the country’s changes from Pinochet’s regime in 1973 to the present day. Never having been to Valparaiso, Hoepker wanted to revisit Larrains work here and investigate what remains of its winding alleys and backstreets framed so beautifully in the original series.

‘This crazy town is full of surprises - beautiful, dirty, full of wonders and never boring’ – Thomas Hoepker
