Chunyun: Spring Festival Travel in China

April 7, 2016
by Alex Majoli
This past February Alex Majoli visited China to document the world’s largest annual migration: Chunyun, the Spring Festival travel season. It’s estimated that this holiday migration is sixty times larger than the US equivalent, Thanksgiving.
2.9 billion trips are made between January 21st and March 3rd. Approximately 170 million migrant workers take part in a sort of reverse-migration, returning to the towns and villages they had left for manufacturing jobs in major urban centers.
The vast majority rely on road transit and it’s not uncommon for passengers to spend 30 hours on busses during their trips. Even a minor problem can cause ripples that can effect hundreds of thousands of travelers.
