When the borders are highlighted it is the time to wonder what they enclose, what is so valuable and unique that allows no mixture.
Amongst the multiple and tendentious definitions of concepts like “nation”, “country” and “homeland”, it‘s beyond its geographical and territorial understanding that juggle our emotions, our pride, our memories and even our idea of honour. National identity has always been a political tool with a shuddering efficacity.
“Milana del Toboso” is a critical study of Spanish national identity in times where the air is thick and controversial. This project brings an invitation to discover the country with no political or historical preset and proposes a look at what can be reduced to the absurd in efforts to relax postures.
Taking as reference two of the major exponents of Spanish culture, “Don Quixote” and “The Holy Saints” , Cristina de Middel travelled around Spain to question the solemnity of the rituals and the decomposed modernity of a country that never dares to put lyrics to its national anthem.
