Aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria

October 16, 2017
by Enri Canaj
The 2017 hurricane season has been extremely active. As of October 1st, 5 major hurricanes have developed resulting in 278 fatalities and at least $184B in damage.

Along with other islands in the Antilles, the US Virgin Islands suffered the effects of multiple storms. Hurricane Irma, the most powerful Atlantic storm in a century, struck the USVI on September 6th as a category 5 storm. The storm brought 12 inches of rain and intense winds that resulted in $2B in damage and four deaths. While still suffering from the effects of Irma, Hurricane Maria passed the USVI on September 20th as a category 5 storm, resulting in additional damage.

One week after Hurricane Irma, photographer Enri Canaj traveled to the USVI with the goal of documenting relief efforts. While there he photographed on St. Thomas before making his way to St. Croix, where he witnessed Hurricane Maria’s arrival and the aftermath.
