16 Years of the Afghan War

August 31, 2017
by Magnum Photographers
On Monday, August 21st, President Trump announced a new strategy for US military involvement in Afghanistan.
The US has had a military presence in Afghanistan ever since covert Special Forces landed there two weeks after the September 11th attacks. The 16-year conflict has resulted in at least 88,000 deaths, 2,271 of which were members of the US military.
Magnum photographers have been documenting the conflict and its impact on civilians and troops since 2001. Here is a small edit of the large body of work they've created during this long, damaging and inconclusive war.
