Pierre Bergé, the businessman and longtime companion of Yves Saint Laurent, passed away on September 8, 2017. He is best known as both the business and romantic partner of YSL. He met the couturier in 1958 when he was working for Dior, and together the two launched the Yves Saint Laurent Couture House in 1961. A formidable duo, they made the fashion house an immediate success, with YSL reimagining a modern woman’s wardrobe and Bergé managing the finances and press relations of their enterprise. A passionate defender of gay rights, he supported associations such as Act Up-Paris, and helped raise awareness around the AIDs crisis. A lover of Morocco, where he spent much time with YSL, Bergé also helped create a museum of Berber art in Marrakesh, as well as preserving its famous Majorelle gardens. In 2010, he became a stakeholder in Le Monde newspaper.
