Pennsylvania One Year After Trump

In October 2017, Peter Van Agtmael took a short road trip through Pennsylvania, photographing the state that surprised its east-coast neighbors when it helped deliver President Trump’s victory just one year ago. Suffering from a loss of manufacturing and other blue collar jobs, Pennsylvania has also been hit hard by the opioid crisis. During his campaign, Trump’s message of a revitalized coal industry and a return to robust domestic manufacturing won him favor in the parts of the state whose economy had been impacted by the loss of blue collar jobs.
