Serbian military commander Ratko Mladic has been sentenced to life for war crimes committed during the 1992-1995 Bosnian War. The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia found that he significantly contributed to the 1995 Srebrenica Massacre.
Though the town had been declared as a safe area by the United Nations in 1993, a small UN peace-keeping force was unable to prevent units from the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS) and Serbia from entering the area and massacring more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys.
Since ruled a genocide by the international tribunal, 17 VRS and Serbian military commanders have been found guilty of charges related to the massacre.
