Temples of Stone

December 21, 2017
Stuart Franklin, former President of Magnum Photos and internationally acclaimed photographer known for his contemporary and thought-provoking photojournalism, will exhibit his new work shot on Leica systems at Leica Studio Mayfair from 17th January to 16th February.

Temples of Stone was created as part of Magnum Retold, a new series in celebration of Magnum Photos’ 70th anniversary; current Magnum photographers have been asked to identify an archival photo-story that inspired them and use it as a starting point for their own contemporary story. The series celebrates the powerful legacy of documentary storytelling that Magnum has delivered from its earliest photographers right through to present day.

With his own vision, Stuart Franklin chose to reflect on the North Africa travels of legendary photographer and founding member of Magnum Photos, George Rodger, as he travelled across North Africa in 1957; a dream world of archaeology with human and natural forms chiselled out of the desert, weathered statues and rock buttresses. The exhibition promises to showcase a thoughtful and touching tribute to George Rodger and the stunning landscape of North Africa.
