David Hurn gained a reputation with reportage photography and eventually turned away from coverage of current affairs, preferring to take a more personal approach to the medium. Finding pleasure in things-as-they-are Hurn transcribes the complexity, wonder, and surprise of life into compelling, narrative images. Alongside his long and illustrious career with Magnum Photos Hurn established in 1973 the famous School of Documentary Photography in Newport, Wales - inspiring and teaching many in the process. Hurn started and built his own wonderful collection of prints mostly by swapping his own work with other Magnum photographers.

By creating fiction out of reality Martin Parr has developed an international reputation for his oblique approach to social documentary, and his prolific input to photographic culture within the UK and abroad. He continues to innovate, producing social documentary work that challenges the status quo through satire, and a wry, observant humour. A Magnum photographer, and now president of Magnum, Parr is a vital and iconic voice within the photographic community.

The Swap Shop Project

Following a free-to-enter, open-call submissions period Magnum Photos will judge the entries and choose their favourite 200 images. These will be displayed at a large-scale exhibition by theprintspace gallery, 74 Kingsland Rd, London E2 8DL to run from 30th June to 11th July, with a private view on 29th June. All short-listed photographers will automatically be added to the guest list and the public are invited to join in to celebrate the official opening (limited capacity, first-come-first-served).

As well as the entrants’ selected images David Hurn and Martin Parr’s work will feature in the show. Two people will swap a print with either David Hurn or Martin Parr, giving you an opportunity to be in their collection and for them to be in yours.

The 200 people shortlisted for the exhibition will be able to swap prints with anyone else in the show. This is optional and subject to mutual agreement but it will give everyone the chance to build their art collection in the same way David Hurn has over the years
