Feature - The Front Lines of Mosul
In March 2017, the Iraqi military continued its operation against the Islamic State in Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city.
Supported by US-led coalition air strikes, Iraqi special forces and army units have liberated the eastern half of Mosul and are advancing into the western part of the city, closing in on the Great Mosque of al-Nuri. The building is of symbolic importance to the Iraqi government - it's where IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi originally proclaimed the establishment of a "caliphate" in June 2014.
