AFGHANISTAN. Kabul. December 3, 2021. Ahmadullah (left, behind man), 25, and Abdul Rahman (right), 24, are two former Afghan Army soldiers from the same unit that became addicted to heroin while recovering from wounds they suffered while serving their country fighting against the Taliban in Helmand Province. The men are now undergoing detoxification at a rehabilitation facility located on the dilapidated grounds of the former US military Camp Phoenix in Kabul. The facility, known as Avicena Medical Hospital for Drug Treatment, has been overwhelmed by the lack of resources and the sudden increase in the number of patients since the Taliban took over the Afghan capital.
Without access to proper food and medical attention, emaciated men, among them many former Afghan Army soldiers, spend their time lying on beds in large dormitories, or crouched out in the yard of the former US army camp.
