IRAQ. Near Erbil. 2023. Kurdish-Iranian female Peshmarga from PAK prepare to move to their encampment for the night. Names were not given for security reasons. PAK is the Kurdistan Freedom Party of Iranian Kurds, based in Northern Iraq. The party has between 600-1000 fighters, approximately 1/3 of them female. Founded in 1991, their aim is an independent Kurdish state. From 2014-2017 they were engaged in the battle against ISIS,and since the recent uprisings in Iran they have been subject to drone attacks from the Iranian regime.
