Peter van Agtmael
FRANCE. Paris. 19 January 2023. Over a million people across France demonstrated against President Macron’s plan to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64. He has proposed that from 2027 workers will have to have 43 years on the job for a full pension. 68% of the public are opposed. Public transport was paralyzed by the strikes as well as most schools. From the government’s perspective, the current system is unaffordable because the ratio of working versus retired people is rapidly closing and the system will be in deficit if it maintains on its current trajectory.
