NIGERIA. Ogbia. December 17, 2024.
Permanent Aselo, 23, eats lunch wih her daughter Blessed in their home in Onuegbu community, Bayelsa State. Permanent lost her first child to malaria at five months in 2021. She vaccinated her last child, Talent, as a historic vaccination campaign supported by Gavi, UNICEF and WHO was launched in november 2024. As the most populous country in Africa, Nigeria accounts for about 27% of the global malaria burden and 31% of global malaria deaths, according to the latest WHO data. The vaccination campaign aligns with the Nigeria's National Malaria Elimination Program, which aims to "reduce mortality attributable to Malaria to less than 50 deaths per 1,000 livebirths by 2025," according to government website.
