George Rodger
FRENCH GABON. (Now known as Gabon). Lambarene. Dr Albert Schweitzer. The work Dr. Schweitzer has done for lepers has made medical history. His leper village of 200 patients is located a short distance from the main hospital. New drugs, Diason and Promin, have produced remarkable cures but those with advanced stages of the disease are permanently diseased and crippled. A young Swiss nurse, Trudi Bochsler, works entirely with the lepers. In a short space of time she learnt most of their names and picked up their native dialects. 1951
