Iraq. Telskuf. 2015. Kamala Karim Shaya, one of three people left in the Christian town of Telskuf in northern Iraq, on the front line in the battle with ISIS. The three residents of Telskuf are all elderly women. A small patrol of Kurdish soldiers visited their houses and of- fered to take them to the barracks to protect them. Shaya expressed interest, then cocked her head at the soldier leading the patrol. “Will Cristina be there?” she asked suspi- ciously. The soldier shuffled his feet, looked at the ground, and sighed, “Yes.” “No, no, no, no, no! I won’t go! I shit on her father’s grave! I shit on her father’s grave!” The soldiers chuckled nervously and tried to calm her by promising her a room to her self, but then beat a hasty retreat as she advanced on them.
