SYRIA. Andivar. Rojava. Rokan Rojida, 22, from Amuda: "Four years ago I joined YPJ. When the revolution happened in Syria, I joined it because as a woman, I wanted to defend my homeland of Rojava. For me it is important to show that as a woman, I can fight and defend everything that I have just like men. But I think that my role as a female fighter is more important, because we have always been told that men can do anything. But now I am showing that I can do the same. I fought with ISIS in Serkinai, Al-Hasakah, and Tel Tamir and was injured twice. We attacked one village controlled by ISIS. They fought back and I was shot in the leg. I saw the man who shot me. He had a very long beard and was bare-foot, dressed in a dishdasha, with the words 'Allahu-Akbar' written on his forehead. I saw the hatred in his eyes. He looked like a ghost, who was there to kill me. But with the help of three of my other comrades, we killed him. When I killed him... of course I am not sure if it was my bullet that killed him, because the four of us were shooting at him... but when he died, I felt victorious and happy from the bottom of my heart. ISIS is anti-women. I feel empowered that I get to kill the anti-women."
