Newsha Tavakolian
IRAN. Zardkuh, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari. 2018. Shahrbanou Seyfouri, 75 years old, sitting in her house in Chelgerd town, Kouhrang county. She used to live a nomadic life before her marriage at the age 15. Her father who forced her to marry her husband, due to the patriarchy tradition within Bakhtiaris, was a powerful man in their tribe. Her mother was also one of the bravest woman in their tribe. After her husband left their town to find a permanent job in Tehran, he got sick and passed away in a hospital in Tehran. She raised her 4 children, 3 girls and a boy all on her own. “I had to be strong for my children, they all finished their school and got married afterwards and living a happy life. After my husband’s death I had to call and give his belonging to my only son because my brother in laws were looking after his inheritance. My son sold everything very cheap and never gave me or his sisters anything. That was a huge mistake I made. My father wrote in his will that he wants my only brother to share his inheritance with me and my sister but he never gave us our shares. I took my brother to court, he just gave a small share to us, which is nothing comparing to my father’s belonging. Bakhtiari men only thinks about themselves, they should understand that us women also need to have a share but they never do.”
