IRAQ. Bashiqa. November 6, 2019. Anmar Faris Khorshid, 19, a Yazidi Kurd disabled since birth, sits in a wheelchair next to his home in Bashiqa's old city. Bashiqa, a town located on the north-east outskirts of Mosul, was the site of one of the first battles during the liberation of Mosul in 2016. At the time, Bashiqa lay on the front line between ISIS and Kurdish Peshmerga-held territory. The town was liberated in November of 2016 by Kurdish Peshmerga supported by Iraqi forces, and the town remained under Kurdish control until October of 2017, when the Iraqi Government reclaimed control of the area in reaction to the Kurdish Regional Government's completion of a referendum on independence from Iraq.
