USA. San Diego, CA. 2016. Border patrol agents guard the US side of the border and open the gate to let 6 families unite and hug for three minutes each before closing the gate again. luis hernandez 26 was the first to go.. For a story for GEO about the Hernandez family, one of several families chosen to participate in this cross border celebration of Children’s Day in Mexico. The father of Arturo and Luis, who I photographed in LA, was deported to Mexico and permanently separated from his sons. The emergency door of the border fence opened to give five families separated by the border three minutes each to embrace. The event is organized by Border Angels, a migrant-advocacy group.
