BOLIVIA. Fresnillo Colony. 2002. The one-room home of Peter Thiessen where he, his wife Helena, and their 10 children live in poverty. The children lay on the concrete to keep cool. Peter and his family moved here from Canada. A few dozen Mennonites from the desperately poor mother colony of Fresnillo in Zacatecas, Mexico recently moved to Bolivia, where land was cheaper and where they believed they had better chances of sustaining themselves as farmers. Most have been disappointed by drought and a continuing decline in world farm commodity prices.
