Volunteer auxiliary police receive their instructions in the basement of the precinct house. In one police station, I was told, the auxiliaries’ lockers had been broken into and parts of uniforms stolen. “Who could have done it?” I asked. “Some cops,” the auxiliary said. “Some call us scabs.”
