Larry Towell
USA. California. 2006. Near Boulevard. The wall, in densely populated areas, is equipped with sensors, spotlights, and parked Border Patrol vehicles which include four wheelers. Surveillance has driven many of the migrants to attempt to cross through mountains and deserts where many die of exposure and dehydration, are vulnerable to vipers, or may be attacked by US vigilante groups. Here, Catholic human rights activist Enrique MORONES, places water jugs at various points along the border for migrants who have survived the desert crossing. The water drops are marked with flashing bicycle lights and often a simple cross.
