PERU. Lima. 2006. Lurigancho Prison. Inmates asleep. Built in 1964 for 1500 inmates, Lurigancho holds more than 8500 men today. The risk of contracting the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is 5 to 7 times higher in prison than in the streets. Gangs run the penitentiary with little interference from officials. Many inmates are armed. The budget allotted for food remains at about one dollar per person per day, which is inadequate for proper nutrition. Many of those unable to pay do not have a place to sleep. MSF treats 122 HIV patients in its prison clinic.
