PERU. Lima. 2006. MSF team arriving at Lurigancho Prison during AIDS Awareness Week (culminating in International AIDS Day on December 1). The risk of contracting the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is 5 to 7 times higher in prison than in the streets. Due to the danger of an epidemic, MSF (Medecins Sans Frontieres) began an education campaign and a clinic for treatment in 1998.
