MALI. Segue village. 1996. Pierre Kombe SOMBORO (left) and his nephew Francois SOMBORO celebrate a Way of the Cross, a rite which leads to Easter. Pierre SOMBORO, who died in the year 2000, was the first Dogon who asked missionaries to evangelise his animist people. Behind them stands a huge fetish which is cracked open once a year for magic rituals and animal sacrifices. The fetish is adorned with the mud frescoe of a creature with spread arms. Both wear the traditional muslim boubou and headress.
