George Rodger
Kenya. Masai Moran. After the circumcision operation, cattle are slaughtered, and a ritual fire is ignited by the Elders of the tribe. It must be kindled by the old time method of friction - no matches or lighters. A spark is gathered in the palm of the hand and breathed to create a flame. Once a flame has started, the fire is carefully built up by the Elders of the tribe. The liver of a slaughtered ox, a choice cut, is roasted over a wood fire taken from the master fire of the Elders. 1979.
