EL SALVADOR. Soyapango. 1991. A child plays with baby chicks rescued from discarded eggs from a hatchery that were dropped off at the dump. Residents of the dump would scavenge through the discarded egg crates for chicks still alive and raise them for meat. Residents of the dump salvage tin, plastic, paper, steel, and wood for resale. Some material is used to build their homes where they are vulnerable to wind, rain, and heat, and had no running water nor electricity. Third World dumps remain the work and living sites of many of the world's poor.
