Marilyn Silverstone
Village of Jogana (12 miles East of Kano). FULANI ritual, which marks the coming of age of young Fulani boys.
The boys are hit with a thick stick, and are not allowed to show signs of pain. They grin and preen into a mirror.
If they pass this test, they are allowed to get married and become responsible citizens, and take off the fantastic clothes and hairstyles of their youth.
