GB. Norfolk. Pipeline for mud pumping. 1997. Since medieval times the Norfolk Broads have contained a variety of low-growing water plants in clear water. However, over many years the broads have seen a dramatic loss in these water plants, the number of fish and wildfowl has decreased and the broads have filled up with soft mud. Research has shown that these changes have occured through the increase in nitrates and phosphates entering the eco-system, through human sewage and other discharges. Now, with a grant of £1.15m from the Millenium Commission, restoration work is underway to restore the broad. The Barton Broad project involves dredging the broad to remove nutrient-rich mud and restoring the reed swamp fringe to the edge of the broad. The project, which goes under the name of Clear Water 2000 has also gained the commitment of Anglian Water to invest in further water treatment facilities to ensure the quality of the water flowing into the broad.
