Santa Marta, Cabanas. 1991. A young boy runs with the only TV set in Santa Marta to plug it into the village's only electrical socket and watch coverage of peace talks in Mexico City between government and guerilla representatives. Santa Marta was the first village of repatriated refugees established in a conflictive zone in 1986. In the early years of the war, campesinos (rural peasant farmers) were massacred by the U.S.-trained and supplied Salvadorean army. They fled into Honduras where they lived in refugee camps. During the war, human rights and church organizations encouraged them and assisted them in returning to their places of origin. Returned refugees were heavily supportive of the FMLN guerillas throughout the war. Poverty remained the cause and the visible symptom of the long war.
