In the first days of January 1959 the Cuban Dictator Fulgancio Batista was ousted and escaped to the Dominican Republic.Rebel Leader Fidel CASTROL was in the south of Santiago with his Revolutionary Army and "montaneros" amounting to 8500 men.Since December 1956 they were hidden in the mountains fighting the Batista regime.Their movement was called the "26th July Movement" after the date of their first insurrection against the Cuban regime.This photo shows some of the "montaneros" who helped Castro to free the island.1959
