Guazapa Mountain. 1995. A child and rooster at communal well. Guazapa Mountain remained a guerilla stronghold through out the war despite its proximity to the capital city. Residents often lived underground in tunnels due to frequent bombing campaigns. Civilians and guerillas mixed and supported each other. When the government army penetrated Guazapa mountain, many civilains were massacred as they fell behind the fleeing armed guerillas. The peace accords were signed in Mexico City in January 1992 ending 12 years of civil war. Peasants enjoyed no indoor plumbing nor running water. Water is carried in plastic jugs on women's heads from the communal "pila" to their homes for cooking and washing. Chickens remain the main source of animal protein for the poor (eggs and meat).
