Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson
EGYPT. A village market held on graveyard country across the Nile from Luxor. 1950.
The people are called "rats of the grave", for they are continually digging and finding new graves to raise their meager income. The government has built them a new village, but they won't leave their old homes, and they say, "If we do not stay here, thieves come from outside, from the south and east, from the west and north. Let us stay here and make our small living this way, for we are the protectors of the graves."
