JAPAN. Koriyama City (Fukushima). January 17th, 2012. Radioactive Contamination Testing at Fukushima Agricultural Technology Center.
Since June 20th, Fukushima Prefecture has been trying to make sure every kind of food grown in Fukushima prefecture by examining the amount of iodine 131, cesium 137 and cesium 134. The "emergent" legal limit fixed by the Japanese government was 500 becquerels of radiation per kilogram, but this is supposed to be revised to 100 becquerels in april 2012. In a white room, employees in green coverall and latex gloves use long cutter blade to chop up fishes into tiny pieces. The specimens are packed in small plastic cases, then transferred quickly into a analysis machine, where, after 33 minutes, the result comes up on an adjacent computer screen. The Center had initially borrowed four analysis machines from a government organization and later added six more by purchasing at a cost of 195000 euros per machine in the end of August. The program is currently paid for by budget of Fukushima Prefectural government, but later to be charged as compensation from TEPCO and Japanese government.
