As a reaction against the more commercial and non religious Christmas parades, 133 churches of all denominations from Melbourne and surrounding cities decided to hold an annual religious Christmas parade in the streets of Melbourne. The life of Christ and scenes from the Bible are among the most popular scenes. The parade was held for the first time in 1989.
