SOUTH AFRICA. Limpopo Region, Marken. The Marken primary school is converted from a white Afrikaan's language school into a Black English speaking school. The African school board preferred to have white teachers, thought to be better for their children's education. Ironically the white teachers home language is Afrikaans although they are having to teach in English. The former white pupils of this school are now bussed 150km daily to a private Afrikaans speaking school. Here a farmers wife, Betty Bohrmann is holding her class. Mrs. Bohrmann's husband owns a farm that has seen its cattle count drop to 28 heads in order to avoid tax laws, he has been obliged to fire all his black workers and is now mostly relying on his wife's income. 2004
