MAO TSE TUNG headquarters after the Long March.
In 1934 he led the Communist forces on the Long March, journey of 6,000 mi (9,660 km), to Shaanxi. Escaping from Nationalist forces in Jiangxi province, some 90,000 men and women marched to Guizhou province, then pushed on to Shaanxi province. More than half the marchers were lost in this almost one-year trek.
