Ahmed was walking with two friends on the morning of January 4, 2009 towards Al Shuja'aia, on the east side of Gaza city, trying to find a safe place to stay, when they were hit by rocket explosions. Ahmed lost 2 fingers on his right hand and shrapnel cut a nerve of his right leg. He was taken to Al Sheifa hospital in Gaza and then transferred to Turkey for treatment. Afterwards, he was transferred to a hospital in Egypt where he stayed for a month. He underwent 7 operations and still suffers from shrapnel wounds all over his body. One of the friends that was with him during the explosions died, and the other one lost his legs, but survived.
