FRANCE. Former French politician Simone VEIL (1927-2017) with a photo of her parents. She studied law, and worked for the French Ministry of Justice (1957-65) and as minister of health (1974-79). She became a popular campaigner for women's rights, and was elected the first president of the European Parliament (1979-82).
