"These photographs of a Klu Klux Klan rally were made near my hometown of Columbia, South Carolina, where I was student at the segregated University of South Carolina. I heard that the rally was going to take place in a cotton-field off a rural road. My brother and a friend of his, who were both big guys accompanied me - but I had no problems. When asked by the klansmen why I was taking pictures, I replied that this was a historical event which should be documented."
