40 years since the Six Day War

On the 5th June 1967, after months of growing tension, Israel launched a pre-emptive strike against Egypt, which lead to a brief conflict between them and Egypt, Syria and Jordan. At the end of the Six Day War, Israel had successfully taken control of East Jerusalem from Jordan, plus control over the Golan Heights, Gaza and the Sinai. The war is a seminal event in Middle Eastern history, in both proving the power of the Israel and setting the agenda of Arab-Israeli relations for the subsequent 40 years.
