On February 9, 1950 U.S Republican Senator Joseph McCarthy's made his infamous anti-communist speech. Marking the start of the period of anti-communist witchhunts that became known as 'McCarthyism', the speech is notorious for the piece of paper which he claimed contained a list of 'known Communists working for the State Department'.
