Archive - Archbishop Óscar Romero Canonized

Magnum Photographers

Pope Francis has conferred sainthood on Salvadoran Archbishop Óscar Romero.
During the civil war in his native El Salvador, Romero criticized combatants from both sides, pleading for peace, justice, and relief for the poor. On March 24, 1980 he was murdered while conducting mass. News of Romero's death spread quickly and resulted in an increase in violence which wouldn't end for 12 years.
Though no one has been charged for Romero's murder, the UN-sponsored Truth Commission for El Salvador has accused right wing death-squad leader Roberto D'Aubuisson of ordering the assassination.
