In 1948, Democratic incumbent Harry S. Truman defeated Republican candidate Thomas E. Dewey by just over two million votes. Truman was so behind Dewey in the days preceding the election that the Chicago Tribune mistakenly printed the headline 'Dewey Defeats Truman.'
