The controversial President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, has been placed under house arrest following the military's seizure of power. This action follows last week's decision by Mugabe to sack his Vice President and previously-assumed successor Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Mugabe (93) has dominated Zimbabwean politics ever since the country gained independence from the UK in 1980 after a bloody liberation war. He's been hailed as an African liberator but also criticized for being a corrupt and oppressive dictator.
