The origin of the Native powwow is unknown. It was outlawed in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s (along with all religious gatherings) and revitalized after World War II. Since then, its celebrations, songs and dances have been adopted and adapted by Indigenous communities across the continent.
The largest powwow in North America took place on April 28th and 29th in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
