Stuart Franklin profiles the writer James Ellroy as part of an ongoing project on the importance of place in literature. The crime writer's world can be condensed into two obsessions: pursuing the phantom traces of his murdered red-haired mother, and building a virtuoso literary career on the foundations of a shattered childhood. Franklin traces the places of Ellroy's personal history in Los Angeles including his childhood home and the location of his mother's murder.
