At 14:46 local time on Friday, March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake occurred off the coast of northeast Japan, one of the most powerful in recorded history. Fifty-five minutes later, a huge tsunami unleashed by the quake crashed ashore, destroying cities along approximately 600km of coastline with hundreds of thousands of people.
